ATM – Materialography Some separation processes require taking of several samples from a specimen and a corresponding number of cuts in different angular positions. This often means an additional expense for the re-clamping of the sample and possibly the use of additional clamping tools. The new Brillant 3D is equipped with 5 axis (X-, Y-, Z-, D-, E-axis). This allows positioning and cutting of the sample in nearly all arbitrary positions to the cut-off wheel. The device has all the characteristics of the Brillant 275 universal wet-cutting machine and meets high demands on space and cutting operations with its innovative concept. The automatic horizontal table (X-axis) and cutting wheel movement (Y-axis) can reach up to 80 mm/sec. through highly dynamic axis drive in rapid run. To qualitatively describe the shape of particles, the observer is often content with a mere visual inspection, in the case of fine samples probably with the aid of a microscope. Characterizations like ”needle-shaped crystals”, ”compact granulate”, ”splintered grain”, or ”rounded sand” are quickly made and bring a corresponding picture to the mind of every reader. These descriptions are insufficient, however, when it comes to evaluating the suitability of a material for a specific application. If, for example, sand is intended to be used as a building material, the grains must not be too round. In this case, it is important to precisely quantify this roundness to reliably determine the suitability of the raw material. This is where quantitative particle shape analysis comes into play.
